Mining Museum

Between 1934 and 1992, energy supply for the Lousal Mining Complex and housing was provided by the Power Plant. Since 1996, in the scope of the Lousal Integrated Rehabilitation and Development Project (RELOUSAL), the Frédéric Velge Foundation established a protocol with the Portuguese Association of Industrial Archaeology (APAI) in order to create the Mining Museum of Lousal, launched on the 20th of May of 2001. From then on, the infrastructure focused exclusively on the museological perspective, in the ambit of industrial mining archaeology. The Museum accommodates an important written record, items and equipment that provide an insight into the quotidian of the mine’s prosperity years.

Shower of Science

Dirty, sweaty and tired by the mining work, several generations of Lousal miners have taken their showers here for many decades. With their hardened hands, these miners have removed the entrails of the Earth and explored its mineral riches. For all of us! Today, water is no longer running from these showers; we have exchanged it for light and a yearning for knowledge. Now, this is a place of Science, Technology and challenges to your curiosity. In each unit you will explore, this will be the new “shower” we offer you!
